We have a 13 week old doodle who has made short work of many toys in the 5 weeks we've had her. A friend gave her one of the Fat Cat toys about 3 weeks ago and she has not been able to chew it up!! It is one of her favorite toys. She also has a small beef leg bone we got at Petsmart which she loves. When I need to crate her I stuff it with peanut butter as a treat and she runs into her crate willingly. Lisa

We LOVE the knuckle bones, nylabone teething keys and kongs here. We usually buy them by the case!

Default Answer: How do beef knuckle bones smell?

Not bad at all.
There's a whiff of beefiness to them, but nothing unpleasant.
They go over big with doodles.
We just watched Michael's doodles, Pacha and Maggie recently,
along with our Nigel, when you unwrap a couple of those,
boy did they get quiet and happy to chew, chew, chew for what seemed like hours. give 'em a try!
And happy to hear the Fat Cat dog toys have worked out for others as well!

Actually the best toy we have found so far is an old T-shirt tied in two knots! Sammy unties the knots sometimes but thats easy to fix... and we can untie it and throw it in the washer when needed. She loves it and it is like a stuffed animal in texture, but not full of stuffing etc. She snuggles with it, chews on it, and plays with it by tossing it back and forth shaking her head! Really if your hubby has an old T-shirt just roll it up in the diagonal and tie knots on the two ends!

Wilson is 7 months old and quite a chewer. Fortunately, he only chews what we have given him, but I am finding the same thing - he destroys the 'indestructable' in no time at all. Kongs seem to be the only thing that can hold up!
We thought we had a winner with the rope knot bones (just looking for some variety from the basic plastic Kong), but he shreds them and then throws up the strings...
Nylabones are no good - I think his record is chewing the end off in just under 3 minutes!
Aside from the Kongs, has anyone had any luck with anything else?
What are the 'rules' for at what age rawhides are ok? I thought I read somewhere that they were not very good for puppies. Also, if he is such a strong chewer, do I want to try the rawhide route?

Default ORKA

The orka brand toys are truly indestructible like kong. They are a little more expensive than kong, but a nice twist on an old reliable. These can be purchased at Target and they are kind of a clear, turqouise blue with attaching rope...
The Fat Cat that was recommended on here only lasted about 20 minutes, but I was in the city and forgot the name and bought ORKA at the same time and have found that with multiple dogs playing and chewing on this that it is at least if not stronger than the kong.
Good Luck!

I sometimes laugh when I read this post. I think Gunner is such a chewer and than I just log on here...

Fat Cat has worked for us, but his favorite is the AKA Stuffed Animals at Target. They have squeakers in them. Santa brought Gunner a Duck for Chistmas and that is his favorite toy. They have them clearanced now for $3.50 or so. So far, they seem very duarable.

Dont forget bully sticks!

I recently got Chester the FatCat snake from Target. He loves it. It has a squeeker in it but it makes that crinkely sound too. Then just to outdo me, my husband bought him a FatCat cat...now we jokingly compete over which toy Chester likes better. I think I'm winning (but don't tell hubby!).

Amanda, I think your post makes sense. My dogs made mincedmeat out of the fat cat frog and pink thing (not sure what that crinkly critter was), but I'm sure a not so heavy chewer and not a multiple dog household may not have the same issues.
TooToo, Cleo and Yarra had a blast with these for a few miuntes, while I gave Caesar and Pacino the ORKA toys which they still have today--nearly three weeks later!
Not to say that it wasn't pure unadulterated joy for them for a few minutes with the fat cat toys, but I about had a heart attack when I saw the stuffing all over in under half an hour. I have lost 2 dogs to fiber impactions from toys this year, so I won't buy the fat cat again.

Another thought - Nylabone also makes a brand of hard rubber toys called Rhino. We've had good luck with the 'Rhino Cone', a spikey ball type toy. Wilson's first one lasted about 3 weeks. Today, I tried the Rhino Bone. It lasted a whopping 15 minutes. Needless to say I'll be back at the pet store tomorrow. I recommend saving your receipts and the packaging. For toys advertised for 'hard chewers' a lot of stores will give you a refund if the pooch makes mincemeat of it quickly.
On another note, I also picked up the Orka Gripper which he loves! 15 minutes and still going strong!
He's actually prancing around the house smiling!

Except for Kongs I have just about given up buying doodle toys. Nothing lasts. However, I have found that they are adept at making toys of their own. Grace has taken a piece of wood from the woodpile and turned it into her current favorite. Also both George and Gracie like to chew on irrigation pipe! They dug up part of my sprinkler system and made a very special toy out of the part they severed from the system. A broom turned out to be a winner when I left it out on the porch ....the bristles are missing now, but the handle still serves nicely. They have finally given up on rocks, but a cardboard box is very exciting.

It reminds me of when my kids were little and had opened their xmas presents, cast them aside and crawled around in the boxes! I'll bet I've spent $500.00 on toys in the last 7 months, but the doods can make up better ones!

Jorja has tons of toys but her favorite toys are door stoppers, the knobs off the back of the toilet (you know, those two little cup thingees), chasing her leash (aka her umbilical cord) around the toilet. This is her chasing her leash then catching it, playing tug of war, then letting it go to chase all over again. It's really interesting when I'm actually sitting on the toilet. This picture was from when she was smaller but she still does it.

Here' something strange. A few months ago I was watching a show on Animal Planet. A woman brought her dog in to see the vet after she noticed he had not been having bowel movements. The vet did an x-ray and discovered MANY objects in the dogs tummy. So, he did surgery and found 20+ whole stuffed animals inside the dog. It was amazing. The operating table was full of toys they kept pulling out and whole!!!

Also, my mom has a Chesapeake Bay retriever named Hunter. He is 9 now but when he was younger he would dig for about 20 minutes pulling large rocks out from the lake. Several times he even got cinder blocks (probably not spelled right) out too!! He would just pick them up and carry them to shore. Thats when my mom stopped buying toys, he'd rather have rocks!
