Our new pup Hayley has been to the vet once in the last three weeks. Her second appointment is tomorrow morning. The last time we were there, our vet confused us even more in regards to what vaccinations she should get. Obviously, the Rabies, the Parvo Virus shot, Distemper and Deworming shots are a must. But they gave us all this extra information to discuss and read about to decide what's right for our pup. Ie: Lime Disease, Flea and tick, Heart medication/vaccination, etc. Our pup doesn't go into the woods very much if at all. What do you guys recommend or get for your own pups!!??!! We don't want to give her anything that isn't necessary but we want to protect her as much as we can too. Thank You!

We didn't do any 'extras' until Jasper was about 8 months. Then we added the heartworm pill and a flea pill. We go the dog park and for walks- you don't know where other dogs have been...
Hope that helps a little. |

Thank you guys so much for your input! We took Hayley in for her rabies shot today and they highly recommended (a different vet from before) the Lyme shot and the Frontline Plus...only because it just takes one flea to come in the house/tick and we have inside cats...soooo that did it for us. It's $15/month for each of these medications which she needs on a monthly basis so we are looking into my husbands pet insurance through his work and Pet Meds as well!!

I recommend Dr Dodds vaccine schedule to my puppy buyers.
Vaccination Schedule Recommendations For Dogs Outside of the core vaccines, I would only give the extras if it is a real problem in your area.......and given at 2 weeks after other shots. Although California says that the Rabies shot should be given at 4 months, I strongly encourage that they wait until 6 months old, and have my guardian homes wait that long too. This one vaccine that should be given separate from all other vaccines, and at least 2 weeks from any others. It is the hardest vaccine for pups to handle. The Rabies Vaccine for Dogs: Side Effects and Precautions You Can Take Vaccines also should not be given unless the animal is healthy also!! It is scary what is going on within the vet world....this is something that I feel very strongly about!!! On Heart-worm meds- most vets won't tell you, but it is safe to give Heartworm every 6 weeks, instead of 4 wks. It is recommended every 4 weeks for people that forget.. Look on the internet....there is so much info out there on this subject!! Are We Overvaccinating Our Pets? - ABC News |

You are welcome! Please share this info.....
I am limited in vets were I live..... The one vet practice that I go to is always quick to push drugs. Yet when I suggest natural alternatives, they quickly see where I am coming from, and will recommend them, so thankfully there are others that come from the same camp as me... I cring, and it is all I can do to keep from telling people this when I am standing there when the vet tech says something like "Fluffy is also due for her Rabies too, in addition to her DHLPP shot, and would you like to get her Lymes & kennel cough now too?". If they only knew! It is about the almighty dollar!! Nancy at Doodlesvillve has some wonderful info on this, as well as a lot of Natural treatments for various problems.......LOTS of info on this page! http://www.doodlesville.net/DoggyTips.html Last edited by Lucky Me; 01-09-2012 at 02:30 PM. |

We have always kept our puppies on flea, tick and heartworm prevention from 6 months on, but we are also military and move around alot so we never know where we are going and I just want the pups protected always. When we do travel, by air or car, I always get the girls their kennel cough vaccination, because I don't know who she is gonna be around. On our Christmas flight from Atlanta to Seattle, she was the only pup, but coming back...she was one of 3! Our vet has given me the canine influenza information, but he does not recommend it as we haven't had an outbreak here and the side effects can be worse than the vaccine.

Thanks everyone!! We are going to keep her on the frontline plus flea/tick medication which is very easy to use, not harmful to the dog and only once a month application, and in addition to that, the heartworm medication! Those are the two that most are recommending...the others are not as important but with having cats, and her being around several other dogs, we want to make sure she is protected! My husband also feels very strongly on this, so I have to support him on it as well! Thanks for all the suggestions!
