I am pretty sure you know where I am going with this if you are reading this. Winston hunts out kleenex. whether it be used, or clean in a reachable box. he chews it and spits it out. I have even tried to spray the used ones with the bitter apple stuff. I know inevitably some goes down to his stomach and I know what the possibilities of a blockage can be. If anyone is around he wont, but as soon as you leave, or watch tv, he will sneak away and dig through garbage ONLY for kleenex. Garbage cans with lids you say? nope, he taught himself to push whatever, or lift whatever is off the lid (lifts it so we dont hear the crash), then will open the lid and search through. I am sure he is part hamster. Short of putting in a door contact beeper alarm on the lid/ can to scare him out of this habit, what would you recommend... I dont feel like going outside to the main garbage in the garage each time someone blows their nose!

got the same problem with the min-pin..
we went a got one of those self closing trash cans..then we have to tape the lid shut so he does knock over the trash can the lid won t fly off.. Toby on the other hand had a thing for toilet paper..we tried the bitter apple..did nt work..but, what did work was sprinkling some chili pepper on the roll..best, afterwards is to wipe off the nose with a wet towel.. |

Have you taught your dog by chance the "leave it" command? We learned in our training class that you teach them "leave it" with everything....not just treats, but underwear, toilet paper, stones, socks...basically anything they CAN'T have...this way, when you drop glass in the kitchen or something really serious falls on the floor, they know to LEAVE IT! We started with dog treats and kept one in the palm of our right hand, meanwhile having a handful of treats in the left...each time we layed a treat on the floor (start off keeping your hand over it first) and saying leave it, once their attention is off your right hand....you say good girl/boy and reward them with a treat in the left hand! Repeat this several times....and work up to the tissue paper/tissues or whatever it is that your dog won't leave alone...once they got it down pat, you won't have a problem anymore! But this takes some consistent effort for a few days...Being a Labradoodle and how smart they are though, they should pick it up pretty quick! Good Luck! Worked for us...and now we are working on "leave it" command with Hayley towards the cats...that is a little more of a challeng thus far. LOL!

Deepnite, gotcha! LOL! How did you get Toby to learn the leave it command? Hayley is excellent when she knows she is getting a treat....she will leave anything we ask her too...trouble is...when it's in the middle of happening, and she is chasing the cats or has my husbands hat and I don't have a treat....she won't drop it...LOL! We are still working on that part....we want her to "leave it" "drop it" whenever we ask...not just when we have a treat!
