Default My excessively shedding wiry Labradoodle

Hi all,
I need some advice on what to do about my shedding Labradoodle. I rescued Maddie from the Humane Society a few years ago so I don't know her whole history, but I'm assuming she's an F1 generation Labradoodle with a very coarse, shedding coat. The last year or so I've been grooming her with the Furminator, which seems to help, but the shedding is still very excessive year-round. I have been contemplating having her shaved. Has anyone else shaved their wiry Labradoodle? I'm a little afraid of it not growing back normally.. Any other advice as far as supplements, brushes, or food to help shedding would be appreciated also. Thanks! I will try to get a picture up of her somehow.

alot of people use the furminator..but, i found that it just destroy d Toby s top coat..instead i used a tool call d Coat King..which reach s down and thin s out the under coat..

after thinning, a good brushing and then the cut..i ve found this the best way to cut Toby s coat..

back to the shedding..F1 are going to have higher chance of shedding than your F1b s or Multi s..and then there s some F1 s that don t shed at all or very little..

so they can be at the extremes or somewhere in between..

Welcome to our Doodle home!!

Maddy is really pretty!

I'm not quite sure that shaving her will produce any type of different coat. It will just grow back and be the same texture & shedding will be the same.Unless your intent is to ALWAYS keep her short and shaved.

Bogart is in F1 and we find these "tumbleweeds", as we call them, lying under the couch or against the baseboards. The hairs are like magnetics! They seem to all attach in a small, soft ball and just float around. It's very different from my other dogs where there was hair everywhere! So, it's tolerable. It doesn't seem to attach to clothing or furniture much at all

I use the Furminator. I don't see it ruining the coat as does deepnite, but maybe I should try the Coat King?

As deepnite said, shedding of an F1 can be from extreme to somewhere in between. I find Bogarts to me mild in comparison to our passed dogs like our Springer or our Weimeraner/Lab.

Juneau is also an F1 and sheds a lot. We brush him, but we don't use the furminator or the coat king. I've contemplated having Juneau groomed, but I just don't want to part with his scruffy look!

If you start adding any suppliments to Maddie's food just be sure that they are healthy for her. Be careful on the amount you add too. Some dogs just shed and there's no getting around it!

Cody is scruffy...I have to assume an F1 because of the "tumbleweeds" we find rolling around. I had a pure Lab and the shedding was horrible, the fur was everywhere, year around. Cody appears to shed alot, it is very soft, fluffy type of hair. It is very difficult to sweep up it just rolls around. Since Cody came from a shelter, long hair, or scruffy hair was not allowed so they had him shaved like a Schnauzer. I liked how he looked but we decided to let it grow to see how he would look grown out. I like both looks, but my wife likes the scruffy, fluffy look so you know who wins.
