The past 2 nights Malcolm has vomited in his crate not too long after going to bed. I don't feed him past 7 so I'm not sure why? He gets yogurt usually twice per day and treats while we are working on our training (I don't give a lot of treats though).
He gets the Nutro Natural Choice Chicken Meal/Rice/Oatmeal (as he has since he started eating solid food as this is what the breeder fed him too) with a little Orijen puppy food mixed in. Any ideas? He's about 3.5 months old. |

This happened once to our pup too a couple times. Turns out it happened when she had an empty stomach. It happened when I had spaced out her meals a little further than usual one day, and also another day when she was just more hungry as she had played most of the day and burnt off so much energy that she needed more food.

I have to agree with this. Sometimes acid build up on an empty stomach might cause this. Maybe give him a tad of yogurt before bed? But, if it continues, I'd have the vet check him out.

OK now that I think about it I don't think he has eaten much the past couple days. I mean he's eaten less than usual. We've had kind of a busy couple of days. Now that I stop to think about it I realize I haven't had to fill his food bowl up more than once...maybe twice...in the last couple days.
He's spent extra time with mamma and pappa too which means I'm sure he's had other food treats that he doesn't get at home (even though I keep some of his food at their house). I'm going to add some brown rice to his food for the next couple days. He does go to the vet MOnday for his neutering so I'll mention it then if it keeps happening. Oh he does get yogurt in the afternoon and usually in the evening. I'll wait until closer to bed time for his evening yogurt tonight Thanks!! |

we ve got a doggie door..so we really don t worry about feeding late..
to the point where i feed Toby his final meal 2 hrs befor bed time..and a snack for the other two who are smaller dogs.. then its nearly 12 hrs befor they get up and have a snack..it s important to me that they each get something in their stomachs first thing to keep them from having dry heaves..where they ll vomit up a little white foam.. it may be time to change to another food..they do begin to tire of food soon..it must be the poodle in them.. after Toby turn d 6 mos..he started to get real finicky with his food..i found that the smell of a high meat protein food attracted him more.. if your free feeding him he ll get to know that he does nt have to eat more at any feeding..but, put him on a schedule he ll get the idea soon that he d better eat now or wait another 4 hrs befor he gets any more.. |

Yeah I make sure he always has food in his bowl...he's just not eating a lot of it so I'm not putting more in. We've always free fed out pets. But maybe I should get him on a schedule and allow him only 10 or 15 minutes to eat?

When we first got Juneau we free fed him. Then the puking started.
It took almost a month of trying to find out the right feeding schedule for him, teaching him that he only had a select time space to eat in and also changing foods to one that appealed to him more (like deepnite10 said, the smell of a high meat protein food attracted him more) before the puking was elliminated. At the time, Juneau was puking one or two times a night up to 3 times a week. Juneau is now 11 months old and we have finally been puke free for about 6 months. We now take his 3 cups of food per day and divide it between: Breakfast @ 6:00 am Dinner @ 5:00 pm Snack @ 10:00 pm We found that the late night feeding was more important for Juneau to put a stop to his puking and so far everything has worked out!! Good Luck! |

Thanks, Nikkiey!
I've been puke free for the weekend. I stopped the free feeding and give him about 15 min in the morning and take the food away. Then put it back down in the afternoon for 15 min then put it down in the evening for 15. I also give him his yogurt snack in the afternoon and now in the evening just before bed time. I should have him transitioned to the Orijen pretty soon. I'm almost at half and half now between that and the Nutro. I've been doing the switch very slowly. |

What does the vomit look like? If it's yellow and kind of frothy (sorry! TMI!) then it is most likely acid reflux. Our Daisy is a puker on an empty stomach, it took us awhile to figure it out but once we did we worked with her feeding schedule and we finally have it worked out, she rarely pukes anymore. She eats early in the morning and then again at dinner time (6:00PMish). Then she MUST have a bedtime snack which we just give her a decent sized dog biscuit, usually about 11:00/11:30 or right before I go to bed. As long as she gets a treat she's good and doesn't vomit from an empty stomach in the morning (which is when it was typically happening)

I spoke too soon and have jinxed myself!! Argh!!! Daisy has started vomiting again in the morning. What in the world!?!?!? Ugh!!! She eats first thing in the morning (7:00ish) and she for the last two days has puked up all her food, it's totally undigested and foamy which tells me her acid reflux is still an issue. She doesn't puke any other time of day. We've been giving her a bedtime snack and she hasn't puked for months and suddenly it started again. Probably because I had our carpets professionally cleaned last week, lol! Go figure! I did, however, change her snacks she gets at bedtime, I wonder if that's the problem?
For those of you who feed 2-3 times a day, what's your schedule? Right now we feed her 1 cup of food in the AM (7:00ish) and then 1 cup around 6:00PM. Then she gets a dog biscuit at bedtime (11/11:30ish). That was working great. I don't know what to do. She acts fine but I just feel really bad for her |

Daisy's Mom,
Is it possible that she might be eating too fast? Not only does Juneau have an extra sensitive stomach (one change or addition of medication and he's puking) but he also INHALES his food. He usually only does this for his morning feeding. He would eat his breakfast and then about 7 minutes (maybe even less) later he would puke up his full meal. We invested in the 'slow-down' bowl which has helped teach him to breath and chew his food! Or... Maybe now that she's grown more she requires a little more of a snack at night? Perhaps the old amount no longer fills her stomach and the acid build up gets too her by morning? Or... You should have never got your carpets professionally cleaned!! LOL! She's only trying to make them the way she thinks they should be!! |

Have you spoke with your vet yet? I'm sure they have seen this in many dogs and just might have the solution.
Also, I totally agree with Nikkiey about eating too quickly. And, I'd like to add that sometimes, when Bogart has imbibed a horrendous amount of water, either before or after eating, he ralphs up his food on occasion. There are numerous factors that might be going into this problem. I think a vet may be able to help. Kind of a funny story that just happened to us on vacation. Periodically, we have a frozen yogurt and have always got one for every dog we have had. We found out, that our Springer Spaniel couldn't eat ice cream as he'd vomit it up after eating it, but yogurt didn't have this effect. So, we stopped at this yogurt place on vacation and decided to eat inside because it was hot outside. Bogart ate his and proceeded to vomit it in 3 places under and around the table. The kid working there brought us a wad of paper towels and my husband just looked at him like....."ummm, I'm not doing this!" I asked if he had a mop and bucket which he promptly went and got.......as we left the paper towels begin soaking it up. So, I leaned over to help, hit my cup of yogurt and spilled mine. ![]() We had to move the tables over and completely clean the entire area. Then I asked the "kid" for a cup of water for Bogart. My husband proceeded to walk out the door with the cup of water and it banged him in the arm spilling the water at the entrance of the door. By this time, I was so embarrassed that I moved the sign that said WET FLOOR ( we had been sitting by the door anyway) and walked out! What a fiasco! The next week, after leaving that city, we came back to it. We decided to go back for some yogurt. I walked in and said...."AH! You remember me!" I told him we'd be "dining outside " this time. Too which he responded...."Good idea! I don't want to go through that again!" Bottom line.......if Bogart is really hot from walking or playing and he eats or drinks something really cold and does it fast......he will vomit! His stomach cannot handle a ton of cold water and food OR if he's hot......cold water & yogurt!

Thanks Linda and Nikki! Yes, I've thought about and have looked at the bowl that makes them slow down with eating. It's interesting because I've been paying closer attention the past few days when she's eating and she's not inhaling it like I thought she did. But I still might invest in the bowl anyway because even though I think she's eating slow it might not be slow enough on an upset stomach. I also am wondering about her water intake after eats, that's a great point Linda and I do think she inhales a lot at once after she eats. I talked to our vet awhile back about it and they did say I could give her a Pepcid, but I'd rather not go that route unless I absolutely have to, is that crazy of me? Our old Golden Retriever was on twice daily medication for a few years before she passed away and I hated every minute of it. I felt bad for her and it was becoming a lot of maintenance
And Linda, your story is a hoot!! Oh my gosh I can totally visualize the entire thing (even though I don't know what you look like |

Yep! Vanilla! NO CHOCOLATE! And I don't think he'd like the other flavors anyway.

Mal is having another episode of puking in the middle of the night. The past 2 nights :-/ The first night I thought he probably just had too many treats because he visited his Mamma and Pappa (they just can't help themselves) so yesterday I made sure not to give him any treats, only his food and a spot of yogurt in the evening. I'll be darned if he didn't still throw up. Although there wasn't as much as there was the night before. It had chunks of undigested food, but not dog food it looked like bacon (!!) and potato maybe or apple...I don't use potatoes and I don't remember mom and dad cooking any taters while we were there so. Heck I don't know what it was. I made him some apple cinnamon cookies but I hadn't given him one of those since Tuesday night and besides that I minced the apples in a food processor so it really wasn't that chunky.
So I am about to call the vet this morning, but I'm fasting him today and we'll go to the chicken and rice for a couple days and see what happens. My poor little baby. |
