Spike is scheduled to be neutered tomorrow....he has loose pudding poops again since his grooming yesterday so i am waiting to see how he is today before i take him to the vet tomorrow. How long did it take for your puppies to recover from neutering ? I have searched on here and online and i guess the main thing is to keep him calm etc for a few days afterwards .....any other tips for me ? thanks all !

Diego was his perky self by the next day. When he came home, he was very confused, probably from the anesthesia wearing off and the fact that he suddenly had a cone on his head. But he got over that quickly.
The only real problems we had was that we had him neutered this past winter. And for anyone in the Northeast, you'll know that we constantly had about 3 feet of snow on the ground, which made it difficult to maneuver with his cone. We found he also had difficulty with the deck stairs. So we took the cone off when he went out to do his business and put it back on when he came in. That seemed to work and he never touched the stitches while he was outside. We walked him on the treadmill (slowly) to prevent his stitches getting dirty from the slushy ground. He still had a ton of energy, so it was hard to keep him quiet. We just exercised him in a calm sort of way. Good luck! |

ok, thanks, that all sounds reassuring ! we have rain apparently every day this coming week....in some ways that may be easier because Spike doesn't like rain so he wont want to run around outside (hopefully) ....on the other hand, i don't want his suture line to get wet. i just want it over and done with ! my poor boy has been through a lot lately....diarrhea on and off for 6 weeks, a long road trip, groomers yesterday (he was in desperate need of it !) and up every hour last night with pudding poops from the stress of grooming. Did anyones dogs have stress diarrhea after their neutering ? i am hoping to avoid it ....he has already lost weight this past 2 weeks. The good thing is he is so full of energy and is very playful so i know he isn't sick...i just want to get him back on his full kibble sooner rather than later . I can't really put off the neuter any longer....we are taking a short vacation over the Labor day w/end and he will probably have to go to kennel and they require it.

Sadie was spayed last Sunday (the 7th) and her poops have been totally normal. (I do give her a spoonful of yogurt and pumpkin with every meal.) She wouldn't eat the evening after the surgery, so it was almost 36 hours between meals, so her first post-anesthesia poop was a little strange, but everything normal after that. And she's gained two more pounds since the surgery (!).

we did nt use a cone on Toby s head...perhaps we should have and recommend other to use it when recommended..
instead the vet , after closing the incission..used a liquid bandage that would keep him from licking..i purchased a extra bottle of bandage which is suppose to be real nasty tasting to keep Toby from wanting to lick at cut..that seemed to work the best.. to keep him from wanting to run around..i kept a lead on him throughout the healing period and at other time s i d just leave him in his crate..he seem d to understand that this was his for his own good and was champ throughout the process.. i was surprised that the whole process was so fast..i took him into the vet..and was told they d call me in a few hrs. ..to my surprise..a half hr after returning home i got a call telling me he could be picked up.. |

i did mention the collar and initially the nurse said that he shouldn't need it....then she saw him licking down there where he is irritated from his grooming...i think they will give me one before i leave. They said to call around 1:30 pm to see how he is doing. Good idea on the liquid bandage...i will pick some up later ! The challenge will be keeping him calm, i have my work cut out that's for sure !

Juneau was out of it for about 5 or 6 hours. I felt bad
The next day he was back to his playful self. We only ever put the cone on Juneau at night because that's when his 'cleaning' ritual usually begins. And he did unfortunetly have some poo issues after the neuturing. It took about a week for him to get back to his normal - we weren't sure if it was from the anesthetic or stress though. |

Try to stay calm. By now, it's after Noon here, so the neutering is probably already done. It does seem like an eternity when we bring them home and have to keep them calm.....but it is essential. AND.....believe it or not, it does go by quickly. Can you update us?

we came home around 4pm and although initially he seemed alert and happy he soon crashed and slept for 2 hours in the kitchen. He seems disorientated at times...it's quite sad to see
He has eaten a small amount of kibble and rice (half a cup of each), i think he would have eaten more but i am reluctant to give him any more in case he vomits ...the vet said to only give a small amount. I feel so bad, he needs to gain some weight ...he looks thin We have carried him up and down the deck stairs to the back yard to pee, the vet said to do that for 2 weeks !! i just want to fast forward to next week and have this all over with. |

Juneau has sudden bursts of energy sometime that we like to call 'Animal Kingdom Hour' at our house. This was what was starting to happen by the 3rd day so we knew it would only get worse if we didn't start to let him 'be himself' again. We still had Juneau on a leash outside up until the 6th or 7th day just so he wouldn't take a running leap up the deck stairs, but that was it. |

yeah i can't see us keeping him restrained and carrying him for 14 days ! i am aiming for 7 - 10 days. We have a pro-collar on him, inflatable one. He doesn't seem to mind it too much. I take it off for him to eat and if i am watching him closely otherwise i leave it on.
He has eaten well this morning, has normal poops, actually his poops are small and dry....i will back of on the rice now...i really thought he would be loose as he is most of the time and added rice to counteract that . The only thing i am a little concerned about is he is not pee'ing as much as usual...i guess he was a little dry yesterday and held on to it. I am adding water to his food to make it soupy and encouraging drinks but he has still only pee'd once today and he can usually pee for the USA ! |

I'm taking Sadie for her 10-day post-spay checkup today. Without the dog park to drain some of that puppy energy, it's been a long 10 days! But except for nagging me all the time to go outside, she's been pretty much the same. I took the cone off after a day because she couldn't really navigate with it, and the inflatable collar also made her sort of uncomfortable. So I put her in one of my tank tops and knotted it below the incision area. She still could have gotten at it, but generally she was never interested (I told her "leave it" the few times she seemed incline to start licking). I took her for slightly longer walks every day until we were back up to our usual hour in the morning or evening, and for the last few days I've been encouraging her to run around in the yard to burn off more energy. Perhaps I haven't been as cautious as the vet might have liked. But she doesn't have sutures, just an incision area, so there wasn't really anything for her to pull out, and the incision looks fine to me. Here's hoping we can go back to the park ASAP!
