Our puppy was just born on Monday and we are so excited. Just doing a bit of research on brushes, puppy toys, etc. Any feedback on some puppy must-haves would be awesome. What is important for picking a leash? Thanks in advance. Anyone with experience with the bells on the doorknob??? Just curious if it works.

Hi
i second Linda, search for new puppy tips and you will get a ton of info, i started a few threads around the time we were waiting for Spike and gained a lot of insight into puppy care. We have success with the jingle bells on the door ![]() |

As usual I shall recommend the 'Before' and 'After' you get your puppy FREE ebooks
Before..... http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/BE...ur%20Puppy.pdf After..... http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/AF...ur%20Puppy.pdf I have also found a brilliant set of training videos on youtube by kikopup. Go to Youtube, and put Kikopup in the search box. She is a wonderful trainer and explains things so very clearly. |

we picked up a couple leash s from our Dollar store..and good thing we did cuz they eventually get chew d up pretty fast..after a while we ended up
going thru 8..and many of them we tied back together.. just don t get a metal leash..they ll chew on it and may hurt themselves.. real smart guys..you can t keep your eyes on them every minute..so i d suggest doggie proofing your house..just as you would a crawling toddler..if you now leave you shoes on the floor when you enter the house..then consider a shoe rack..any kinda rack to get the shoe s high enough so he can t get to them.. |

I totally agree with the 'puppy proofing' they are very smart- even at 7-12 weeks old...mine wanted to 'bring' me EVERYTHING - it was cute and annoying at the same time, hehe
Jasper was good on the leash from the beginning but he did like to chew on shoes and dishtowels that he'd pull from the sink if they were hanging off the edge...and he tried to swim in his water bowl so we got elevated dishes and now he is good... The bell- we just tacked it up next to the back door and WE rang it everytime we opened the door for potty breaks...we never did anything else and he has figured out the the bell means the door opens, lol...he still gives a bark and nudges the bell but both are good cuz sometimes we aren't in the same room... Jasper is a finicky eater, but he is steadily gaining almost 2 lbs a week and my vet said to stop worrying about- so I try not to anymore... Be careful of starting bad habits- and I mean YOU...while jasper was potty training I would come back in and give them a treat if he asked to go potty and actually went...so now they expect a treat and come inside and go sit at the 'treat cabinet' to wait for it...I accidentally conditioned them to assume they will get one!!! ![]() HAVE FUN and enjoy the puppy antics...I can't believe how fast they grow up mentally.... and we want pics asap!! |

I also used the bells, but I trained Juneau a little differently. In the beginning I would take his nose and nudge the bells with it and then we would go outside. Eventually, I balance a kibble on the bells and when he would go to eat the kibble he would also ring the bell so I would put him outside. Ater he got the hang of ringing the bells on his own, my husband or I would stand on the other side of the door and wait till Juneau would ring the bells to come out. (we have french doors so Juneau would see us and want to come out to be with us)
As for leashes, Deepnite10 is right. We made the mistake of buying this really nice leather leash and collar for Juneau - we wanted him to be styling!! But, that only lasted about 3 months. He chewed threw it really fast After that we just bought cheap ones until we knew he would be okay with them. |
