Default Ruff's first night.

Good morning!

I am typing this with one hand and Ruff on my lap. We had an interesting first night.

We went to bed about 10pm, and we put Ruff in his crate. This is a large crate and has a box with a bed, a litterbox with sand in (we live on a sand-dune) and newspaper. Also gave him a kibble stuffed Kong.

I was sleeping on the sofa in the same room as the crate. the rest of the family were the otherside of a closed door where we hoped they would get some sleep!

As soon as the lights were out Ruff cried and howled. I was determined not to let him out of the crate so in the end i lay down beside the crate and put a hand through the bars and he finally settled down. I crept back to the sofa and had just settled down when we had an aftershock! Ruff woke up again, so we had a repeat performance!

He woke again about 2 hours later so I took him up the garden. I said nothing except 'be quick' and 'yes!!' when he performed, fed him a liver treat as a reward, took him back and popped him back in the crate. Then about 2.30am we had 2 more aftershocks so as we were both awake, back up the garden we went. He performed again, back to the crate. This time he settled more quickly, with me with my hand between bars still. in fact he just whined a little and fell asleep. I crept off back to the sofa.
The next aftershock was at about 5.30am so I switched on the light and declared it morning! Ruff went back up the garden and peed again. Then he had breakfast and I sat outside with him watching the sunrise until he pooped.
With the puppy now empty we went back inside to play.

Now they have all gone off to school/work and Ruff is dozing in my lap.

I should point out that the reason we got Ruff now is because for various reasons (not least of which is the quake) I am not working at the moment, so I can be home all day with Ruff.

I am very tired, but due to the aftershocks waking us, Ruff had no accidents overnight whatsoever!

The cats, by the way, are affronted! There is indignation pouring out of every pore. Ruff is unsure and is keeping clear, but unless i am supervising I make sure they are kept apart for the moment. I don't want Ruff to loose an eye to a cat claw!

All being well (as I am not used to doing this) there is a link to a photo of Ruff below. We have discovered he is not very photogenic as he is so dark. I like this photo as I was born and brought up in an antiquarian bookshop!
