Default Help identifiying our Choclate Labredoodle

Hi all we are new to the site and just picked up a 10 week old pup. Ive been doing a little research and he seems to have more of a lab hair style rather than a poodle hair style. Also we have a 3 yo chocolate lab ( hes in one of the pics ) that is having a hard time welcoming him into our home. He is growling at the pup whenever he gets near him. How long do you think before he welcomes the poor little pup into our home. We had a 4 yo beagle that shared the home but we had to get rid of him because of behavior problems but Zach the lab never had a problem with him unless there was food involved. Im taking hes just very jealous at this point. He looks like hes going to be one HUGE Labradoodle though, im thinking like 80 lbs?

10 weeks old? He is a BIG one!

He certainly has a ton of Labrador in him, but he is adorable! It doesn't look as if he will be able to climb up on your lap for cuddles much longer!

That's the thing with cross breeds I guess, each one of them will look a little different - unique.

I can't help with the issues with your older lab, just supervise them if you feel uneasy I guess.

I'm having trouble viewing the pictures (issue on my end), but regarding the 2 dogs meeting, when we first brought our puppy home at 8 weeks my older dog (12 years) was not impressed. We ended up having to invest in a mesh muzzle to ensure our pups safety. The two dogs still do not play together 6 months later, however, we have reached a 'compromise'. The two dogs can co-exsist in the house together (without the muzzle now) and anytime my puppy gets too hyper and trys (yet again) to play with the older dog he gets 'put in his place' and it goes back to the friendly, "don't try playing with me, I'm too old for that now, if you leave me alone, I'll leave you alone."
My husband and I have not given up hope that one day we might be able to leave them together unsupervised in our backyard, but for now we'll take what we can get.

P.S. I should add that our older dog, Bear (german sheppard/husky), is NOT a social dog. He was severly teased and abused as a pup/junior and it has taken us years to help him come out of his shell.

I know I don't really have any advice to offer, mainly because I am dealing with a similar problem, but I can encourage - Don't Give Up. Don't let they older dog control the situation with your pup. You are in charge and both dogs need to know this. At times is may seem like the older dog is causing all the problems, but step back and view it from their point of view: crazy, hyper furball coming at you with high energy and excitement. Maybe the older dog is just trying to get his point across to the pup, "listen, settle down cause I won't stand for this and that's not how we are supposed to act" or it very well could be more....
I know I'm not much help, but maybe if the situation doesn't improve, have a trainer come out to your house. A different view might offer some other suggestions.

10 weeks? That is one big puppy! He seems to have thrown to the lab side where coat is concerned, but it is sooooo cute! What a charmer!

Re your older dog. I would remind him he is the first. Feed him first, pet him first, take him out leaving puppy at home. The pup won't mind, in fact he'll be reassured because the last thing he wants at his age is to be top dog!

Sorry it's taken so long for people like me to respond. My Windows PC crashed and I had to budget in a new Apple laptop and try to get it all set up.

To me it looks like you have to get on top of your Lab and get him to welcome the poor pup.
I would show the Lab attention, but at the same time, he needs some strong commands regarding the doodle.
Is the Lab trained really well? If so, you need to get him to sit/stay while you work with the doodle in front of him. When he listens, the Lab, give him a strong and high pitched GOOD BOY and a treat!
Also, try to get them involved in a game of some kind.....like fetch. Stay on top of him and make him know the little guy can have the ball too. One time he gets it, the other the doodle gets it.

Whatever you do, don't make the Lab feel left out and like the doodle is getting more attention. They should have equal attention.

I had this problem years ago with a Weimeraner Lab and Springer Spaniel. I didn't know how to handle it then and the Lab just was horrified by the Springer. I kept them separated, which was a big mistake. I needed to follow the advice I'm giving you now, but didn't know.

If you work on it, it will change.....maybe get a trainer to help you?

we took the advise of the breeder..just let them introduce themselves..
and let them work out their own differences..of course i stay d close by
and watch for the baring to teeth..

we had the same concern..we already had 2 other adult dogs..each smaller than Toby at 14 wks old..and were afraid how they d react to one another..

after a few growls and nips...Toby fell in line as the newb.. i was very fortunate he learn d his position in the pact very quickly..

today they play together, and watch out for one another..Toby s now close to 90 lbs, still takes a back seat to the other 2..

I just wanted to pop in and say that you have one gorgeous puppy! I can't stop looking at your pictures cause he's so cute! To me he looks like an F1 (first generation). My dog is a black F1 and seemed a lot smaller at 10 weeks. At 4 years old he hovers around the 60lb mark. I think 80-100 lb is probably right but I am no expert. My previous dog seemed similar in size as a puppy and she ended up being a 110 lbs of pure teddy bear. Sorry I can't help with the agression issues but I think you've got some great advice in the previous posts. Enjoy!

Heres an update of what Cody looks like at 8 to 10 months. He and Zach are getting along great now and are best buddies. Cody turned out to be a real handsome doodle. BTW at 10 months he is bigger than our 3 yo Chocolate Lab.
