hey, I am building a dog house out of gifted items. I just now thought if it is ok to paint or stain it? its wood that has been donated so some isnt treated. In order to protect it, I need to coat it. Just curious if the dog starts to gnaw on it, Im sure paint isnt highin nutrition

I don't see why not. Lead based paint has been banned since at least 1978 in all states and that is the worst enemy in all paints and stains.
When you go to the paint store, just tell the manager what you're doing and perhaps they can help you buy the safest for your doodle. I'm editing to add: If any of the donated wood has been painted, make sure that it is completely stripped before using it, unless you know, for sure, that it was painted after 1978.
