Default Yawny Growly Doodle

Our dog Ruby gets up and yawns every morning when she sees us, but when she yawns she kind of talks through it if you know what I mean. It's not as though she has just woken up because most mornings she is up well before us, but she does do it as soon as she sees us. Sometimes she will do it more than once. I have never seen a dog do this before, and wondered if she is just saying hello, or whether its some other form of communication.

Anyone else experienced this?

Haha Diego does that too, every morning when we walk into the kitchen. Sometimes he's really loud about it!

I've just been reading about calming signals in dogs, and apparently yawning can be a calming signal which dogs use when they are getting exited.

I don't know about the vocalisation which goes with it however. Ruby gets very loud sometimes!!

Then again, I also read a website which mentioned that just before greyhounds race they have been seen to yawn alot, which increases the heartrate, in preparation for activity.

when Toby snorts it s usually the beginning of a sneeze..at which point i get out of the way of the upcoming doggie boogies..

Our Brinly does the same thing lol! I love it, it's almost as if she is saying hurry up and get out of bed mom, I wanna EAT! lol.. And she gets very excited when I say "Are you hungry? Wanna EAT?" LOL

to me, yawning is the body saying it needs some more oxygen..just as we sit at our desk over long periods we ll yawn..

the down side..though cute..is when they yawn in your face in the morning

Roxy does that too! She used to just do it in the mornings but now she does it when she wants me to pay attention to her!
I managed to get a video (no picture) of it once. Listen till the end, she does it twice.
