Hi, I am new to this site. I have seen some discussions on this topic but still feel compelled to start another. I have a 5 month old Black ( I think) first generation labradoodle. I have never owned one before and don't know anyone who has. A few weeks ago his muzzle completely changed to a chocolate brown. I am now seeing patches of brown on his legs as well. It even looks like the roots of his hair in certain areas is brown. I'm kind of excited because I really wanted a chocolate but I fell in love with this sweet black one. My main question is do you think he will turn brown all over or will he be a strange patchy mix? I'm hoping he will be one solid color, whatever that color is. I'd love to hear any feedback anyone may have. Thanks

First off...WELCOME!!!
If it looks more of a licorice color....I would say he is turning "Blue". It is kind of a gun metal color. It can take up to 2, even 3 years to totally change. It is common for a black dog to turn brown on the muzzle, but then the legs are changing...... If he is out in the sun a lot....his color can fade too, but if he is brownish at the roots, I would say he is turning Blue. PS: The grayish dog in my avatar is my Blue Marley...

Thank you for your reply and welcome! My pup had a sibling that had the same coloring as your dog in the picture. He(or she) is gorgeous. I wouldn't mind mine turning into that color. The change shows no hint of gray or blue though. It is a very chocolate brown. I'm so anxious and excited to see what it turns out to be. He does spend a good deal of time in the North Carolina sun which is pretty strong. I'll have to get a pic of him up here soon after he gets a bath, lol. Do you have a lot of experience with Labradoodles? I'm a complete newbie but I am in love with this dog. I am already thinking of getting a cream colored girl after I get Bear fully trained. I've been debating about shaving his coat but have read a lot of negative things about doing it so I think I will not do it. Did you have a hard time when his/her adult coat was coming in? I guess I have a lot of reading to do on these subjects. Thanks again

strange how our children change colors..i was told Toby would be peach..i think in doodle
terms that d be a light brown mixed tinge of pink?.. well he came to me completely cream in color and when exposed to alot of sun it d turn almost chalky white.. it was nt till he turn d 1 yr that his coat started to turn apricot across the back..from a distance it d look like he was wearing a saddle..eventually turning down his hind and fore quarters..even now at times id think his coat will turn cream again, only to be peach the next day..i guess if you ve seen what a golden lab looks like..his coat is very similar in color..*most of the time* the biggest change has come in his coat..at times when i have nt run a comb thru his coat it becomes woolly like dredges to make of this..is he really woolly if i don t comb him daily?..i know under his chin, half way down his chest its woolly all the time.. if you closely at my avatar you can see the peach saddle on his back.. |
