I just noticed, while outside, today that Lucy's face is getting lighter and the fur on her back has cream colored fur all mixed in! To look at her (esp in the house), she looks all chocolate, so I was shocked to see so much cream underneath!! He mom is an AKC chocolate lab and her dad is an AKC cream standard poodle. Is this normal?
Here are pics to show you what I mean. The close-up actually makes her look creamier than she really is, but I am having a hard time capturing it like I see it! Fur on face: ![]() Fur on back, when I separate it: ![]() Really makes me wonder what the heck she is going to look like once she blows her coat! The suspense is killing me! :P |

First, congrats again on a very cute doodle. It is very common for a chocolate doodle to fade to a lighter colour, blond through to almost white. It can be only on his/her face or it can occur all over the body as well. It is called cafe, lavender, and parchment, depending on the amount of fading. You can google image search for examples if you like. It's actually harder to get a chocolate to stay dark brown. I'll post a pic of one of our puppies that was born chocolate and faded.
Here is Hercules at a year old, faded very nicely:

No way! I had no idea that a dark brown chocolate could fade like that! Hercules is gorgeous, so I guess I won't mind Lucy fading after all. I can't wait to see your puppy that was born chocolate like Lucy and faded. I have a feeling, colors will be changing around here! I am pretty excited.
Thanks for sharing with me! |

Yes, Todd is right, it is common for chocolate dogs to fade. My standard Poodle was very dark chocolate and we thought that he would hold his color but after about 4 years he started to fade. He is very different in his coloring...you can't tell by the pics but he has an unusual "frosted" look...one vet I took him to (she was a breeder) said, "Look at his beautiful coloring! I have never seen anything like this...if he is a breeder, you have an excellent color!" (I was so happy!)

so far Beck hasn't faded but he gets 'sun bleached' his fur gets quite light (reddish gold) on his muzzle and the front of his legs, but the fur on his body doesn't seem to lighten, nor do his ears.

Thanks...Todd, he is more of a parchment but with brown streaks though...it is pretty up close. I will always have him...he is my baby boy...but we rarely use him. We don't have any F1s breeding now...
It is my understanding that chocolate Labs hold their color and chocolate Poodles fade. I think that is because so many Pooldes carry dilute genes and Labs don't. So, it should depend on the genetics...Lab or Poodle. |

I am learning so much here!
I am in love with personality, so color doesn't matter so much to me. I just never had a clue that she would/could change! |
