Hi, Julia!
I think there are lots of doodles who have trouble with matting. Two out of three in my household matt a lot. They form right before your eyes and only get worse every second until you get them OUT!! No, it isn't that bad....but, it does seem there is a seasonal thing about when they get so bad, so quickly. Any towel rubbing is prohibited nowadays around here. Blotting with a towel and a blow dryer with a diffuser is the best....IF you don't have a gorgeous sunny, warm day and can't take a good walk in the sunshine to dry their coat pretty quickly. Just be sure you have combed and de- matted before you bathe them.... Washing first tightens the matts so much that the whole mess is way worse!! I do a clean-up trim after they are dry,.....meaning, I have done the basic big cut earlier. They are sort of a pain to deal with....I prefer it to a lot of shedding, though.

I am not fond of Coat King or similar products because they are razors and will cut and strip the coat, not detangle it...that is why their ads always show a BUNCH of fur coming out when you use it...I always thought it was damaging.
Personally, if my dogs's coat is too matted to easily remove, they get a shave down and they are so much happier...matting hurts them, like having your hair in braids for days at a time...ouch! So, I don't like pulling at them, I much prefer cutting them out or shaving them off. Plus the regrowth is sooooooo soft and nice... |

i used to use the furminator on Luna.......believe me it aided our allergies and MAX it really does leave his coat thick but takes out the
undercoat that i'd end up having to brush 2x a day so for NON_curly dogs/cats it can hep hahhaaaaaaaaaaaaa and reduce vacuuming duties NOTE the coat king is only used on MAX once a year: springtime!!! ugh!! shed-time!

Thanks for everyone's feedback and kind comments about her appearance! Pepper's hair is coming back, I'll have to post a picture in a bit. You can all watch her grow like a Chia-Pet!
We did end up buying her a little jacket. She was shivering when she first got her cut, but I think she's gotten used to it. I have to say, I have gotten used to her short fur too - it was just such a shock at first. She looks so pretty now when she runs, you can really see her graceful long legs. |

A Chia Doodle!! hahaha
I am so glad that you are used to the look...I actually have grown to LIKE the shorter look...can't wait to see what she looks like. Funny how they love their coats, isn't it? The coat really helps them too! My dogs have a sense of security when they get a coat after their haircut. Oh, I can relate to enjoying the run! I think that there is no creature more stunning than a standard Poodle at a run...and some Doodles get this trait too...I am awe-struck when I watch them...the incredible grace and athletic lines...gorgeous! |
