I have not used them as a permanent method for potty training but I do use them for initial training for puppies to get the idea of where to potty. The main problem is that the pups soon learn that they are great to shred!

I like the idea of growing some grass inside. But I also think you should attempt to take the dog for walks to potty outside so that he/she will be used to potty time on various surfaces. If you only teach it to potty inside on one surface, you may have difficulty later on...if you move, vacation, or kennel your pet.
