Default OK, Here is my bad news!!

I decided to go ahead and post my~ oh, soooo sad~ news.
Finally, deciding to wait until June, or July to breed Coco and planning things with that in mind
....I received her hip test results yesterday.
She has moderate hip dysplasia in her right hip.
She will be spayed.
And, as I said to someone earlier,
I will cry. Again.
I comforted myself yesterday with the fact that Abby was getting her hips checked today and
surely she will have excellent hips!
So, today I took my Abby, that I am a guardian for, into Dallas to have PennHip done on her.
I was shocked to view her xrays and talk to a PennHip specialist....
She has moderate hip dysplasia in both hips!!!
She will be spayed and I won't have one of her puppies to breed, either!!!

Having planned this and prepared to breed
and hoping to have puppies this coming year,
hoping to keep two puppies
out of the mix for future breeding....I am pretty devastated.
I love the personalities of both my girls so much...they are otherwise very healthy....
I so wanted to have their pups to share.
Oh well.
I have watched an entire movie..( something I rarely do )
and now am going to bed.
Maybe the clouds will have lifted a tad by tomorrow.
There is hope for other options in the future, so that eventually I may get into this as planned....
and that is a relief and a comfort!!
Right now I feel I have been indoctrinated a weensy bit into the world of breeding .....
through these disappointments.
Too much
for two days and
my only two "breeders!"
Surely good things are ahead, right?
Nite,

((((((((((((Jane))))))))))) i am so sorry and right now not sure if there are any words that can really comfort you
as I really do feel for you with this type of news.

I do have a question though: the Pennhip exam, normally the vet isn't allowed to discuss this with you
and it takes 2 weeks or so to get results back. I am NOT saying vet is wrong but with ABBY please do not rush into anything
yet. Let this news sink in, wait for results from pennhip to confirm and i'll send you an email in short while

i am sure you'll let the breeder also know as if your doodles are possibly both predisposed to HD then the breeder(s)
need to alerted.
I will be saying prayers though for you and also if both pennhip and ofa are correct that your doodles don't show signs
as some don't or don't until older ages. others will also advise you on diet, exercise and more on HD or trying to alleviate it
showing up, for now i'd like to know i hope your okay as this is not easy news to handle

thank you, annmarie

well, the vet at the radiology center seemed very knowledgable and did explain the xrays to me.
coco's vet showed me the xrays and gave me her opinion, which ofa confirmed.

both breeders have been notified.
i am ok, just got up to get some water and sat down at the computer.
long day tomorrow...so going to try to go back to sleep.
i know that all things work together for good....
i wish it wasn't so hard getting to the good sometimes.
more later,
nite

Jane, I am so terribly sorry for your news. I know how much you were preparing for breeding and, to me, this is one of the most tragic parts of your news.
Here you are, caring and excited and studying and doing everything you can to produce healthy puppies...what an excellent breeder you are! And, yet, fate smacks you with a double whammy...right between the eyes!
Still, I want you to know that I sincerely admire you and the efforts you have made toward being a responsible breeder. Yes, this news is sickening, but I believe that if you had bred your girls before testing (or without testing) you would have felt much worse now.
So many times breeders decide to "breed now, test later" and they think that because their dogs are healthy and sound that they will produce healthy puppies...your story is a kick in the backside for all of us who are breeding...genetic disease happens...even in the most healthy looking dogs, even with the most careful of breeders.
If you had waited to test these girls until after you created puppies you would now be looking at potentially passing this along to them. Your nightmare would be continuing to their testing.
So, as hard as this news is to swallow, please look at this in a different light. You have done a marvelous thing. You have done what many are too afraid to do. You have shown us all what it means to love your dogs enough to do the right thing, no matter the cost.
This is a setback, for sure, but having breeders with heart is what the world needs more of...and when you do find the right girl to breed, you will be as sure as you can be that your puppies will be strong and healthy.
For that, I congratulate you...even in this time of heartache...I congratulate you for your courage and unwavering moral code.

Jane, I'm so sorry. But you have 2 beautiful and loving companion girls. You'll have to keep them all to yourself. Things could have been worse.....

(((Jane))) I'm so sorry things turned out this way for you. I can see why you'd be upset. I have to agree with Jac that it's far better to find out now than later when pups would start showing problems and you'd feel responsible for it. Sometimes being responsible isn't much fun but in the long run you know you've done the right thing.

thank you so much, everyone!

I am better today.
Jac, you're right, I would never want to pass on to puppies
this awful disease. I am now praying that neither of my girls
will suffer too much with it.
I will be vigilant to be cautious about their activities....
(HA, that will be a sight to see!! Me, trying to keep
them from leaping into the air....we will throw the frisbee low to the ground and discourage
jumping for it...which we have tried to do anyway, but not always.)
AND I will put them on supplements for hips and joints, in general.
We don't have a pool, so swimming regularly won't be possible....I don't think.

The vet said that their problems were due to genetic causes,
not injury....from what she could tell.
Amazing that both parents can have good hips, but dysplasia still show up!!
I know.... from way back wherever....geesh!
I am sort of forced into a holding pattern right now with breeding.
Ha! Here I was trying so hard to
make the right decisions, and I didn't have an option immediately anyway!

Soooo, that brings me to the fact that
I sure would like to see the economy change a little, so that I don't end up
with beautiful healthy puppies and no interested and approved buyers!!
I understand that even shelters and rescues are having a hard time placing pups
into good homes right now. I don't know how true that is, but that is what I have heard.

In another post, Nancy said she had tons of folks applying for her pups!!
What a wonderful problem to have!! Obviously her many years breeding and her
word of mouth business is working in her favor, in spite of the downturn. Good job, Nancy!

Well, this is long, I am sorry. It does help to talk about my woes....which
as I said aren't as bad today. I know in hindsight I will learn a little
bit about why this happened. Sure would like to know NOW!
Patience isn't my strong suit.....

Going to snuggle with Abby and Coco will be at my feet....
She must be near, but cuddling isn't her favorite.

Thanks again folks! You are wonderful friends!!
Bless you all!

Thanks, again, Jac !

Your support and kind words have helped me and my perspective is better than it was
yesterday....and the day before!

But, I am watching another movie tonight!!
Don't want to think too much....something I do naturally, unfortunately!

There is a shot you can give them once a month that is suppose to help not sure how much or how good it works but you might look into it. I'm sorry that you are having to go through this with them but without testing all of us would possibly be producing more puppies just like this. I know that even with testing and both parents passing OFA we can still produce a pup with HD but I do think are chances are better with testing than without.

Yes, I agree Linda!! Eventually, if all breeders would test their breeding dogs a lot could change
in the lines and HD might go away to a good extent. In both my dogs, their parents and grandparents
had been tested and all had good hips....no dysplasia. I guess you definitely do all you can do to insure
your puppies have the best possible chances, but that doesn't guarantee 100% that there won't be an
occassional fluke and a neg. genetic trait show up anyway.

Coco's breeder offered another pup and I saw two F1B puppies she had today and decided against them.
I can't tell you for sure why...but they weren't what I am looking for. They were 6 month s old.
I don't think they would be considered "breeding quality."
Which is what???? I have my thoughts about
that....what does anyone else look for in a puppy to possibly breed ?

Linda,
Thank you for the info about the shot....I will ask the vet about any injections to give....
I have heard of one that helps when symptoms
flair up...pain, arthritis, etc. So far they seem fine.
I will just give supplements and monitor their
"rough" activity and try to keep it down.
