Visiting with another Dog

Hello,

I have an inquiry and I am being asked if it's okey for me if they see the pups and bring another dog with them. I have advised them that I don't accept visits until the pups have their parvo shots. I don't think there is anything wrong about bringing another dog in my place to see if the pup of their chose will get along with their other dog but healthwise I am concern. Have you ever been asked of this?

We have been asked if someone can bring their dog along, and it's not a problem here, at all. Now, having said that, I have a small front yard play area where people meet our puppies, and they can bring their (vaccinated) dog to that same area, so it's not like they have the run of my house, or back yard where the puppies usually are. But I figure, it's a public area along a public sidewalk, so it should be relatively neutral for all. And puppies are pretty easy going in general with meeting new dogs, right?

How did you handle it? Do you have a neutral area where your pup can come out and meet the owner's other dog? If so I don't see the problem.

And I am just the opposite. I would say "Absolutely not." Nope. If it means losing a sale, so be it. I have trouble with just the families coming to visit...it is very easy to pick up disease on shoes and such, but dogs walking where other dogs walk, trails, parks, dog parks, can really bring home serious diseases. All it takes for me to say no is to read the symptoms and the horror stories of Parvo.
We had puppies with kennel cough and that was bad enough...nosiree...people who visit have to wear booties at my house!
I'd suggest that you research the diseases, how they are communicated, how long the viruses live and decide after you know more.
I asked my vet if I could take my puppy with me to visit my mother in another state. He said, if you KNOW that there has not been a parvo infected dog in TEN YEARS on the property, then go ahead.
This is not the first vet who has told me such things...another vet told me that I was wise not to let visitors in without shoe covers (I made him wear them when he came! LOL) because, in his words, "Once you get Parvo, you NEVER get rid of it."

I don't let people bring dogs either for the same reason Jac has mentioned. I'm too afraid of Parvo I know some kennels do and that's okay for them, but it just isn't for me.

In June of this year we had a adopting parent bring their dog and this is something we do not allow. They let the dog out to relieve its self on the far end of our property. 2 weeks later we had sick puppies ( coccidian parasite ) something we have never had in our kennels. We of course took all the puppies in for treatment but out of 2 litters we lost 6 and shortly after Our kennel had "Kennel cough" again something we have never had we lost another 3 puppies even though they were treated.
I strongly suggest you NEVER allow strange dogs on your property.
We spend a couple thousand to disinfect the property and all our dogs

Oh, Tink, such a hard lesson to learn...people ask me all the time too, and I won't allow it.
In fact, I am glad you posted this I am going to pass it along to someone...thank you!

know what? i have to agree with those that say NO
MOST times an older dog will either tolerate or like a puppy. As well as treat it as such.

AND like the reasons stated above it's a shame if your puppies end up sick and possibly die too.


here's a reverse on this

I have had a few friends get puppies recently and REFUSED to let them bring their puppy to my house till that puppy is 16 weeks old , totally vacinnated with all shots and tested NEGATIVE for worms/parasites etc

Max didn't meet Peanut till the day we brought her home though when i socialized peanut's littermates i always left my shirt and jeans by the laundry door so he could smell her and other puppies scent to get used to it ....so when peanut came home Max would recognize the scent.

I would not be offended by any rules imposed by the breeder--in fact I would RESPECT that the breeder is taking such precautions.
