Todd,
That is ridiculous..Ocean State in RI charges us a little over $300.00...
If you can get another quote I would. The smaller Vets will charge more due to the Anesthesia cost...Ocean State is the busiest Animal Hospital so they must buy their drugs in bulk..Another Vet in another small town in Ri wanted to charge us 400.00...It pays to shop.

The two in Kingston are both that expensive. If I go to Ottawa or Toronto it costs me a day off work, a tank and a half of gas, ugh. But I'll call and see.

One of the views used for Pennhip, the dorsal-ventral?, is the same as the one required for OFA. So, if you pay for the anesthetic, the vets time, etc...since the xrays are digital now, it shouldnt be much more to send that xray to both places, so for maybe 50$ extra you can get OFA prelims as well as Pennhip. Hmmm.

This info is a bit out of my league...but if you are saying what I think you are, that the film is the same and you can have it sent to OFA for evaluation, I believe that many breeders do that. And, I do believe it is a small fee, relatively speaking.

But...question...what if you get conflicting reports?

JAC in the past when i was talking to breeders in Australia, Canada and US........when they get conficting reports
1. they went with usually the PennHip
2. they choose the better one
3. some would not use the same place again and/or OFA they said they had problems with and stayed with Pennhip

NOW as stated it pays to call around for pennHip as i too got quoted from $250 to $350 and then if i wanted
for an extra $50 they'd do OFA at same time

OK TODD here in US sometimes the VET does NOT do the xrays for OFA and the VET TECH does them.
that's a question to ask

I have found that some vets are certified PennHip but not on the list....might be worth calling around. The vet I use is certified but not on the list, I just found him by calling the clinic (actually it is a 24 hour hospital, with tons of vets) and asked them if they do PennHip testing.

Yes, it is an excellent price! I had been paying $350, which is still pretty good in California. When I called around I found some that were charging over $900!!
I didn't know it would be that inexpensive, they quoted me a price around $300, but when I got there, they totaled it up and the PennHip was only $250. I have gone back and it is still the same price. And the vet is good! (I was a little worried with the lower price, but he is really an excellent, caring vet...graduate of UC Davis.))

I called around before I did PennHipp ......one guy 30min from me on list was $250. the other place over 1hr away was $350
so it does pay to call around.

TODD I am wondering how far are you from Rochester NY????
the VET I had do PennHipp on BEAU is 30min NORTH of me going twoards Lake Ontario
he charges $250 and does PennHIpp all the time for breeders as we have 2 on the list for NY STATE both being by me.
and quite experienced , yes certified, did extensive training etc.

i'd use him as a regular vet if he wasn't such a distance from my house.
