High dynamic range pictures

Does anyone know anyhting about high dynamic range (HDR) pictures? Can you do it with puppies or is it just for landscape shots? From my understanding you take 3 shots of the same thing, one at EV +2, one at EV 0 and one at EV -2 and somehow you combine them in photoshop for a HDR picture. But how?

My daughter is a little photoshop whiz, learning all she could with our "antique" program (Photoshop 6.0)......
She is now taking a photoshop CS3 class. I asked her your question and she said "huh"???
Perhaps that is something she will learn laterin the book or maybe that is more of a photography question...

It says- "High Dynamic Range-technique (HDR) can create incredibly beautiful pictures which blur our sense of the difference between reality and illusion", perhaps you could have fun with puppy pics, but it seems more of artistic tool than something you would use to alter puppy pics to post.

You understand it correctly. However you must fixate the camera, so don't take the pictures out of your hand as positions will not be the same.

HDR is about overlaying exactly the same pictures but with different lighting (don't know the correct english word....)

Editing/overlaying can be done with Photomatix or with a plugin for photoshop.

With a pup will be difficult I think. Unless you can have the pup sit exactly still for 2 minutes.....

If you have an iPhone there are several HDR apps. You can also do it on photoshop but the settings need to be different for portraits because landscapes will have a higher range of colours that need to be accentuated.
You take a photo at high shutter speed accentuating shadows slow shutter speed accentuating high lights and normal speed for mid tones. You just need to blend them to your liking but to be honest there's not much need to do it for dogs as far as I can see.

There is a specific HDR program for windows that blends the photos where you choose exactly what settings you want but it just takes a bit of toying to find the perfect settings.
