This link was posted on the Doodle Zoo...very interesting article about the genetic link to all coat types (linked by 3 genes and mutations of those genes): http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/co ... 2009/827/1

Ha! I saw this too Jac! Almost posted it but had to leave in a hurry......
I am thinking that that is what is behind the DNA testing at Vetgen??? http://www.vetgen.com/canine-coat-length.html I also have read in past that there is a gene that controls a smooth face or a hairy face. Tuesday has a thick, wavy coat, but outside of a little goatee, the hair on her face is smooth coated. Out of her 11 puppies, 10 have hairy faces. One that started out looking like a lab, now has longer hair all over, but the hair on his face is only about 2 inches and scruffy(he looks more like an F1), so I don't know if that would count as "hair on face". I have seen doodles with a hairy body and smooth face....makes sense now. I LOVE genetics, I had a blast when I was involved with colors and patterns in parakeets & cockatels, so am excited & fascinated to be able to be involved in the development of this breed!! |
