I have been using Pawsitive ID for a while but with the recent changes and a possible inaccuracy of their testing I am looking for another company to use to do DNA testing on my dogs. Do you have any suggestion?
My female poodle was negative on all the testing they offered before but had two puppies died of hemophilia. Both parents had the pawsitive ID DNA testing so I cannot understand how they did not detect it. Per the specialist who did the blood draw on one of the puppies, my female was the carrier of the disease. I submitted the Pawsitive ID certificate of my dog to Cornell University in the hopes that they can give me some idea on what could possibly happened. With that, add the emails I keep getting from Rick Dobbins of Pawsitive ID. The first one saying the old testing cannot be done, even though I had an email previously saying they are still good if submitted not later than September 1. He is apologizing and gave me the option to get a refund, so of course I just want a refund. A week later, he is saying he cannot refund me because of some contract with Texas A & M. So pretty much I am stuck with them. Take care you all, Maila

Oh, geeze, Maila...that is a kick in the gut...I am sorry.
I believe that the tests are accurate but, as in all things human, mistakes can be made...I am so sorry that this mistake had such devastating consequences. Have you contacted Rick about your puppies and their testing? Maybe he should know this...I'd be very interested in hearing his response. (Privately, of course.) |

When you got PID results for vWD, was it for types 1, 2, and 3? Although rare, you can also get acquired vWd, which would not show in a DNA test, from autoantibodies, and hypothyroidism.
I am really sorry about the loss of two puppies, its tragic, and especially so when you thougth you were in the clear from genetic testing. I hope Rick can give you some answers, or at least re-run your previous samples to see if it was human eror or there really is something else going on with you dogs. |

Just for clarification... PID did not test for the problem that these pups had...so there is no error on behalf of PID.
It is a tragic, horrible event...I am heartbroken for Maila...but I don't want Rick's company to get any blame for something that is not attributed to them...I clarified this with Maila via PM. |

Hey Todd!
One of the puppies died at 4 weeks, it started with a swollen leg and limping. I took him to the vet twice and the leg was drained the second day, 4 hours after that he died. Another puppy showed the same symptoms at 8 weeks, after consulting with my vet I went to a specialist. The specialist did a blood draw and sent it to Cornell University. He was tested positive with hemophilia A thru Cornell. It's very rare and most people doesn't even know that it is hemophilia, they would think it's just an injury or a spider bite. The reason for the swollen leg, or limping is due to the bleeding of joints. It's very hard to watch. There is no cure and even with prolong life with the plasma infusion, the specialist said a dog with the condition will be lucky to make it over a yr. old. The second puppy died 3 days after he was tested. Thanks, Maila

Oh, Maila, this sounds SO heartbreaking!! And when we think we have done all we can do to screen for genetic awful disorders....sigh. I'm so sorry. Way to go on writing and working with Cornell!
I got my vWD tests done on my dogs through Vetgen before PID. And yeah, I really trust them. Also, if you call them, they will talk with you. Is there any screening or test for Hemophelia? You can attach your order to any Vetgen "clinic" or group order being held around the country, they explain how that works. My heart was breaking as I read of your losing 8wk old puppies. Were they pre-sold? what a bummer. |
