I wrote to the PID company and asked about the vWD testing, I mentioned that their notice is that they are not testing for types I and II but that it appears they are testing for type III, I asked what type III covered...this is their response:
When we were told to stop testing for vWD, a mistake was made in ordering our array chips and the disease was left off the chip completely, so right now-we aren't testing for any vWD. We expect to have the two we were ok'd for back on the chips this summer and hope to be able to test for all types by the end of the year. The one you need is our test, 10-C which tests for this in Scottish Terriers, Dobermans, Shetland Sheepdogs, Manchester Terriers and Poodles. |

Hooray, Jac!!!
I thank you, too for looking into this! I am so glad to hear they intend to be able to test for it again soon. I can wait for awhile to have that one done....At this point, since my experience with hip problems.... I will be doing PennHip first on another pup.....at 4-6 months old, so that I know that earlier on. The DNA testing I'll do when they have the vWD I need. If both parents are clear for vWD....wonder how often, if at all....it shows up in any puppies??

Jane, if both parents are cleared for vWD, then the off-spring are also cleared. No need to retest.
I used to do what you are talking about...test PennHIp first...then I realized that if the other (cheaper) tests were bad, I may not want to PennHIp...so it made more sense to me to test the other things first and if they are all good, PennHip next. I am even considering OFA first because it is cheaper and will give an indication of any trouble... I still prefer PennHip to OFA... I am so conflicted. hahahaha |

"Conflicted" should be my middle name.....
Yes, I had the same rationale with testing with PID first since it could prove the expensive hip tests are unnecessary due to some other problem.......and probably will do that again. I guess that still does make sense. I just hate that I was so sure both girls were fine, especially when the PID tests came back great! OFA prelims are cheaper than Pennhip....and could give a decent indication about the future condition of the hips....so maybe that is the way to go. Then if there is any question, or suspicious findings, you can retest later when older....to be sure?
