Dozens of Animals Rescued From Kenosha County Property
Authorities Investigate Possible Neglect Silvia Acevedo TOWN OF PARIS - More than 60 animals were rescued Friday and Saturday from what authorities call deplorable conditions. Forty-eight dogs were packed into makeshift kennels in a barn with little food. Some were nearly frozen. Fifteen horses may have been kept in their filthy stalls for a year. The animals were found in two barns along Highway E on property being rented by a woman already charged with improperly sheltering animals. Authorities say 70-year-old J.C. Heiberg has a history of problems with animals. Court records say she was charged three weeks ago with improperly sheltering animals and resisting or obstructing an officer in Fond du Lac County. "This is probably one of the worst (cases) in terms of how many horses we have here," said Patty Simpkins, founder of Green Gate Rescue Farm, an organization dedicated to the rescue of horses in need. "I see a woman who believes she can care financially, emotionally, and physically for 13 (sic) horses, and I can tell you that she cannot," Simpkins said. Heiberg has not been charged in this Kenosha County case and is not in custody. Rescuers say the horses were in stalls with wet, filthy bedding, for a prolonged period of time, possibly a year. They say the animals have hoof and teeth problems and were underfed. The 48 dogs were taken to the Safe Harbor Humane Society in Kenosha. Rescuers do not expect any of the animals will have to be put down. Both organizations are looking for any form of help or donations they can get for the care of these animals, including finding foster homes. For donations, contact the Safe Harbor Humane Society at (262) 694-4047 or through their Web site, http:www.safeharborhumane.com. http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/15146446.html

Hi, I'm a new member here!
I live in Kenosha, Wisconsin. We lost our 14-year-old beagle/English pointer cross about six months ago, and have been dogless since. Just when we were thinking it was about time to get another dog, a friend of ours who is a reporter for the Kenosha News told us about the labradoodles rescued from the puppy mill. I decided to look for info on the breed. Lo and behold, I stumbled on this thread. Thank you, Mike, for the links to the news stories, especially the first one from Fon du Lac. Thank goodness Kenosha is more proactive and had the sense to take the dogs! The Safe Harbor Humane Society, who is currently caring for the rescued dogs, said they cannot be released until the legal case is settled but we were welcome to put in an application. We did I have known and loved both labs and poodles. Labradoodles are new to me, but they look like the best of both breeds. Hopefully one of them will end up in our family. I'll let you all know! |

My husband and I went down to the Humane Society today to see if we could look at the rescued doodles. Despite being told on the phone a few days ago that they were not able to release them until the court case was settled, it turns out that all 48 of them have already been adopted and are in good homes!
They did have one lovely female chocolate doodle that someone else surrendered, but three people have already applied to take her. We looked at all the other dogs, but none of them seemed quite right for us. We're planning to check back every few days. Our home needs to have a dog again. |

Oh, I'm so sorry Farmcat, that has to be so dissappointing. On the other hand, I'm glad that the dogs have found loving homes. The right dog will come along soon and he/she will be a very lucky pup

I am fostering one of these labradoodles that was rescued from the Kenosha puppy mill earlier this year. She is one of the most timid, but good news! She is getting adopted by her forever family tomorrow morning!
When I first took her home she would cower and shake constantly. Now here is my baby girl, Jenna, after a lot of love and kindness. She is still very timid around people, but is slowly learning what it's like to really be a dog... for the first time in her life. ![]() For more pictures of her you can visit Jenna's Photo Album Her sister (who was already adopted) has a blog that her new family made for her!
