Hi Doodle friends!
This is a question that many people face in looking for a puppy...in your experience, with your Doodle, is there a huge difference between male/female temperaments and personalities? I know of someone who is looking for a puppy and they were sort of set on a female pup, I have explained to them that male Doodles are just as mellow and loving as females...but I asked them to take a look at this forum...so, would you mind giving your opinion of male vs female? Thanks! |

I've always had MALE DOGS my whole life and well didnt' realize i'd end up with our 1st female: Peanut, a sweet cute lovable cuddly female goldendoodle.
NOW that i am sitting her trying to think , I really have no preference since I'd say its really the Dog's TEMPERAMENT /personality that is most important. Next is the person who raises and trains the dog. Max and Peanut both have the personality I wanted in a dog. It's a 10 to 15yr committment thus it's important to find the Traits you like, AND what would fit in your home/lifestyle as well. Years ago i was into long walks, hikes, being outdoors alot always on the go when my kids were younger. My family and I can be high energy personalities but being in middle age now , well it's different ---we look for the easy going ,laid back ,sweet personality that has just a little spice to it. Max is very mellow and i'd say most male dogs are...Peanut though once she hit 11mos old, well she mellowed out bigtime. I love being outdoors but not as much in colder weather, my kids are also grown thus we like to be couch potatoes at times watching our news or a good movie by say 8:30pm. BOTH our doodles are very much like us and love to snuggle at our feet. they need moderate exercise and so do I summary: For me and my family, it doesn't matter which gender (male or female) , what does matter is the right temperament for our family.

I have to agree with Ann Marie. Temperament is more important to me. I've only had male dogs, and for doggie number 2 my preference is female only because I want to buy pink things!!!! But, it will still be temperament first and if the match is a girl, great! if not, oh well! But I'm also nervous about a girl, because I've heard that they can be clingy, or rather one person attached-- so those with females, I'd LOVE to hear your stories!

Before I got Denver I had not had a dog in many years and since I had only known males I chose a boy.
My second dog I also chose a male based on our experience with Denver. Temperment is of course the first priority but I already had the utmost confidense in my breeder and her parent dogs so I knew what we were getting as far as that was concerned...............for us it just came down to what we were comfortable with and we have 5 very dominant female cats in the house so we felt another male would work better.................. |

I can't really help because I have never owned a female dog in my life!
I really don't know why, thuugh. BUT........Bogart plays with a female Labradoodle down the street. Her name is EL......she has the best disposition! I'm not sure why, but she's not as affectionate as Bogart is with neighbors. I know she is wonderful with the kids........a baby and a 3 year old. Overall SHE is terrific!!

Awww, Michael...of course you do!
Thanks everyone...please keep your comments coming. I gave my opinion to this person over the phone but I have sent a link to this post so that they can get an idea from a variety of owners. |

I would go by temperament also. My 2 males couldn't be any different. Jonah is an old soul in a young dog. Rumor is a loving doofus! Miko is Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. She can be the sweetest thing on earth, then in the yard, a racing crazy mad woman.

I've always had females and only because I never cared to see male parts all the time.
but....... the other side of that is I believe opposites attract. I think male dogs are more affectionate to their female owners and vice versa. Just my opinion though

I have one of each. Sofie has always seemed like an older soul, even as a puppy. Very mature, obedient, and loves to please. She looks at me with her beautiful eyes as to say "you are my world". She is very affectionate at times and at other times likes her space. Parker is very comical and a big goofball. He is almost overly affectionate. He cannot seem to cuddle up close enough to me. I love both their personalities but don't know if this is a gender issue.

Actuall good thing about having MALE DOGS once they're fixed...." they do it cause they can" well they don't do it cause they
have a breezeway with no wind obstructions
