How do you know the difference between a BYB and a Hobby Breeder? I saw these puppies online.
Link deleted by moderator, please PM poster for more information. I have a feeling it wouldn't be a good idea to buy one of them. |

You can call and get more information, but I'm a bit suspicious because of the price being so much lower than breeders I've seen. If you search the forum you can find a good list of questions to ask the breeder that can help you decide if this person is reputable.

Honestly I would look for a breeder who raises their pups inside where they can be socialized with all of the sights and sounds of home.
Just because a dog has a pedigree doesnt make it valuable~ Testing and a history of healthy puppies does. Why are they spaying the mom? We keep our puppies with their mother until they are at least 6 to 7 weeks old. They the moms can come and go as they wish but they still spend more than 50% of the time with momma. This is how they learn critical skills.

Having a pedigree only means they have a list of his ancestry... not that he has a notable one. So that for me would be a non-issue unless you're knowlegable about Poodle lines and want to have a pup from a specific line.
I think you can get a good pup from a hobby breeder or even a backyard breeder, but you're not going to have any genetic or health guarantees, they've likely not done much if any testing, and the thing that made me raise my eyebrows is their age. If this is the second litter from this pair and they're 2 1/2 yrs old they either bred back to back litters or bred the dam when she was less than 2, which isn't usually a great idea. Also if the pups have just been wormed at 5 weeks of age, and their site says they're ready to go next Monday, will they be at least 8 weeks old when they're leaving mom? They really should be. I wouldn't say they CAN"T have nice healthy puppies... but I would certainly ask a lot of questions and consider the fact that you're giving up some protection to buy at that low a price.

She said they were going to the vet this Friday and will have the shots done then. I did ask about the dew claws being removed. She said she didn't do that with the first litter. She said she would ask the vet about it on Friday. That made me go hmmmm. I admit I don't know what dew claws are but I see it mentioned on other breeder sites.

A lot of breeders do not do dew claws.......
Ask them about what testing they have done and what are their health guarantees for starters and then if satisfied ask for references from her first litter......... and then just keep asking questions till you are satisfied........ |

Quite seriously, if the dew claws weren't done early I'd just leave them and hope for the best. Not ALL dogs encounter problems with them later, it's just that those who do have a tough painful time having them removed at a later date.
I have mine done at 3 days of age on all my litters. One litter was born on a Wednesday and my vet was out of town so I had to wait till Monday to have them done and those pups cried and bled considerably more than any of my others who had them done at 3 days ever have. So in my mind the best time for doing it is already passed. If all else is as you wish it to be, I wouldn't consider the dews a major obstacle.

There are amazing breeders here on this forum and if one is close to you, I would use them. Or, you can post what state you are in and people can "pm" you with recommendations close to you.
I researched for months and actually gave up my deposit with my first breeder after researching on this site. If I had had all this wonderful information before I gave my deposit, I would have made better choices. Everyone here is so nice and knowledgeable. Please be careful. This is a long term commitment and you should feel wonderful about your choice. Best of luck!!

I would love recommendations. I live in the Chicago area. I would like a F1B. I would love a multigen but can't afford one
How does that one look? Should I not post links? |

On dew-claw removal....I recently talked to someone that wanted to get their puppy's dew-claws removed. I told them they should have it done when they were having their dog neutered. They called and checked it out....even then it was $50 extra a dew-claw, yikes!

Wow Judi, that's a lot more than for a puppy... My vet charges $7.50 per pup at 3 days old.

You might contact Jane S she might teach you how to do it yourself.
We no longer do them and don't support doing them but if you want to learn she might be a good source.

Judi, I don't think I have the heart to do it.
I give shots, (which they rarely even notice) and have pulled puppies that were stuck in the birth canal. I've picked up someone's scalp when it was almost fully detached and put it back on his head... I've done CPR numerous times, have held little kids still for a spinal tap, I removed staples from my dad's back surgery... but I don't think I could cut the dew claws off a puppy. LOL I've turned into a real wimp with age. Anything that might hurt I will gladly pay to have someone else do while I'm out of the room. I realize it's not hard... but I'm a big chicken when it comes to my babies.
