Hi! I know the 'technical' difference between a labradoodle and a goldendoodle but I was hoping others could help me really drill own the every day differences in these two breeds. We were hoping to find an australian labradoodle to re-home or rescue for the allergy & asthma benefits for our middle child, but it turns out its quite rare for a need for re-homing and we don't qualify for the doodle rescue collective as we have a child under 5 (our youngest is three). Anyhow, I saw dog today and asked if it was a labradoodle and she told me it was a goldendoodle, it was actually what I thought was the size of a medium labradoodle but she said it was a mini. Anyhow, he looked just like the labradoodles we've been looking at and I asked if he was hypoallergenic and she said he was and he didn't shed at all. So now I'm thinking that might open up more possibilities for us to find the dog we've been hoping to bring home this summer. So what are some differences in these breeds we should consider first? Thanks so much for any help!

the only goldendoodles i ve seen are the F1 s..1/2 &1/2..
as with labradoodle F1 s.. there s a greater chance of shedding and being hypoallergenic than the F1b, second generations.. however, my cousin does have a medium F1 golden doodle..he s just a beauty..he has a wavy coat and does not shedd and is hypoallergenic.. |

My husband's cousin has a goldendoodle and she's hypoallergenic. Zoe's (the dog) Dad is half golden retriever and half poodle and her mom is 100% poodle. She is bigger than our Juneau who is 65 lbs now, but she's as gentle as a giant. My guess is she's probably about 75-85 lbs, but like most doodles, they can vary in size.
And I just found out that Juneau's Mom is actually 3/4 yellow lab and 1/4 golden retriever (I thought she was 100% lab) and his Dad is an 80 lbs black poodle!! I know I haven't posted any pictures of Juneau yet (waiting for new computer - long story) but he's a beautiful apricot colour with crazy wild fur/hair. Maybe this explains the random black hairs I find occasionally!! |

As far as the allergies go, remember not all doodles are hypoallergenic and some shed. It is the poodle part the is hypoallergenic and has the non shedding coat. If the allergies are severe you may be better with a poodle, and it may be easier to find one at rescue.
Having said that....doodles are GREAT! But be very careful with an F1 as not so many are hypoallergenic, some are, my own Barney was, but most are not. I think your best bet would be an F1b. Ruff is an F1b and he has the poodle coat (he is a very poodley doodle!) An F1b is a labradoodle bred back to a poodle so the dog is 3/4 poodle 1/4 lab. enough lab to provide a laid back, happy go lucky, attitude to life but a poodle coat. I am a mum of 2 coeliacs, 1 anaphylactic, and environmental allergies amongst the crew include dogs, cats, birch, all grass pollen, horses, rabbits, whiteboard markers, solvents and we have 2 with asthma, 2 with exema (sorry spelling seems to have left home!) and 3 with hayfever, and another one with hayfever if the pollen is bad! This is amongst 5 people, with different people showing up to different things! And nobody is allergic to Ruff! Another thing to note, for some reason many F1 and F1b doodles seem to be bigger than their parents, so bear this in mind. |
