Question Genetic health testing

What kind of guarantee does genetic health testing offer puppies against hip and eye problems?

Basically, I guess I am asking that if the parents both have 'clear' hip and eye tests, does this mean that there is no way that a puppy could develop issues later in life? Does it guarentee that you will be buying a dog free of these ailments or could they still develop health issues?

The price difference between health tested and non health tested pups is quite significant from the research I have done so far.

How many of you have Doodles with hip and eye issues?

May I suggest using the search on the forum? There are many members, in the past, who have answered with quite a bit of knowledge regarding genetics etc.

Genetic tests give you a guarantee since if they don't have the gene they wont get the disease. Its very worth your money to buy from tested parents to guarantee your pup will be clear. For eyes, a breeding doodle should be tested for the PRA gene. CERF is a physical test for eye health and this only means the eyes of the parent were healthy at the time of checking, which does not tell you about their future health of the puppies. It should be redone every year.

Hip testing is not a guarantee but still very worth it. In a large study of Labrador retrievers, the rate of hip dysplasia in puppies from untested parents was approx 45%. In tested and cleared parents it was under 20%, but it did still occur. This is because Hip dysplasia is only 50% genetic and 50% environmental influences, which the breeder does not control once the puppy leaves them at 8 weeks old.

I hope this helps.
