Talking Re-naming the Labradoodle

Labradoodle, it's such an unfortunate name for such a beautiful dog. I'm almost embarrased to tell people that I want to buy a Labradoodle!

My suggestion for a new name for the breed is 'Australian Curly Sultan'. Sultan being the 1st succesful coated dog that Wally Conran was able to produce.

What do you guys think?
How do you feel about the labradoodle name?

Haha I feel your pain. When asked each time what kind of dog he is, I kinda hesitate. I do wish it was more of an "independant" name.. dont know how to type what I am trying to say.
I guess it is better than the opposite-------> a Poodor?

Yes, I do sometimes feel corny saying "Labradoodle". I do feel better about just saying she's a Doodle, but then people want to know if Daisy is a Golden Doodle or a Labradoodle. But then people typically light up, they often say "Ooooohhh, she's one of those doodle dogs, I've heard about them!" so then it's all fine.

a few purebred advocates would have a few bad words about the labradoodle..yet the majority of people i ve met are endeared to the term
labradoodle..and quite interested in other doodle hybrids..

When we first got Murphy and people would ask what kind of puppy, I'd usually hesitate as well, however, now that she is 7 months old and a character, I'm proud to say 'Labradoodle'. If people have an issue with it, it's there problem not mine.

Really? I've always been proud to call Roxy a Labradoodle. We always get positive replies and no-one has ever remarked on their name to me. Usually along the lines of "Really? Gosh, they're so gorgeous!" Of course that may just be Roxy, she's such a sweetheart! *Proud parent*

I'm totally fine with Labradoodle........and I like it! I think it's a cute name and am uneffected by anyones reaction to it. Besides, once they see how smart Bogart is and what he does, they don't bother to question or snicker. Most people say....."if only my dog was as good and sweet".

My husband never says "labradoodle" - I overhear him sometimes when he's talking to people about Rocky and they ask what kind of dog he is - James will say "Oh, he's a lab and poodle cross...." - lol. People nod their heads like they understand - lol!! If I get the chance I always say "He's a labraDOODLE!!!" just to freak my husband out - ha ha ha.

When we got Barney over 17 years ago now, (he's waiting at the Rainbow Bridge) we didn't know they were called labradoodles, although it was after the first deliberate one had been bred.

Barney was an accident, mum was supposed to breed hunting labradors, dad was the standard poodle from the end of the road...

We started by calling him a labrador cross, but he had a curly non shedding coat, unusual in a first cross, and people used to say "crossed with WHAT?"

So then we started saying poodle cross. Then people would say "I've never seen a poodle that big. Crossed with WHAT? An ELEPHANT?"

Anyway when he was about 5 years old we read an article in the Independent newspaper in the UK about a woman who was breeding these new dogs, invented in Australia, called Labradoodles....

So then we said he was a Labradoodle...and people said "a WHAT?"

At least this time round people have heard of them. Only one person has commented, and she said "Don't you want a pure-bred" and I said"no". End of conversation!

"End of conversation" is right, Katie! We don't want these adorable doodles to be a breed.........I LOVE saying Labradoodle and I must say it a cocky way where no one bothers to go a step further.
Besides, once they start petting Bogart and he puts on his little show, yawns and stares them in the eyes while bowing and rolling over on his back for belly rubs......they could care if he is an alien.......they LOVE him. No more questions asked.
