Hey you guys - ok - so I'm super new here - and I came to kind of ask some Labradoodle questions - and from all my research (I'm obsessive - I admit it) - I am 100% on board about getting a doodle. I know how to choose a breeder, I have a list of breeders to work from that are in my area - and I'm in the process of narrowing it down to which few to consider getting a puppy from!
I have to wait until fall - sigh - that makes me sad - the more I read about everyone's pets - the more I want one RIGHT NOW - but as I mentioned before - I'm going back to work - teaching - this fall after being a sahm for 8 years - Ok - but - in my obsessive research - I've discovered GOldendoodles, Double Doodles - and oh my goodness - they are all so beautiful and seem like the perfect pets for us. SO - I wanted to hear from you guys - what's the difference?? I mean - I know what the obvious difference is - lol - but what about temperment - coats - colors - etc etc... I'm so confused now - I've gone from wanting a LABRAdoodle to now just wanting a DOODLE!! ANy differences in the different Doodle types that are worth mentioning?? Heather |

Your subject line cracked me up! But.........what is a double doodle? Ya got me there too! Okay.......Since Bogart is a Labradoodle, I'll explain his traits and characteristics. His mom was an English Yellow Lab. Dad a smaller Standard poodle. So.........Bogart has kind of a laid back Yellow Lab disposition. He is very mellow and sweet. He can be extremely playful and runs like crazy and gets sooooo excited to be around people and kids. I, seriously, have never had a more gentle dog. He is protective of the house, however.......not laid back there at all. I'm not sure which side of him makes him so smart.the lab or the poodle. But, WOW! He is really amazingly bright and looks you right in the eyes when you talk to him. I absolutely LOVE him and will always have a Labradoodle....... He is an F1 which means half & half. An F1b is 75% poodle......25% Lab or Golden Retriever and they don't shed at all.......from what I heard. As an F1, Bogart sheds minimally. There are people here with Goldendoodles.......half Golden retriever and half poodle. I have heard wonderful stories of them but can't speak to exactly how they are at home and their lives. I'm sure they will be able to help. So for now....this is all I have to offer!

There is basically no difference between a LD and a GD in personality, by breed anyway. Labs and Golden are very simmilar and when you mix them with poodles you get pretty much the same temperment in each type of doodle. It depends more on the specific parent dog than the difference between a lab and a Golden. In first generations (F1s), there are more coat colour options in LDs since labs come in 3 colours, and Goldens do not, i.e. you cannot get a brown F1 GD. The coat of an F1 GD is usually longer, but by the time you get to F1b (F1 bred back to poodle) the coats are the same.
Double doodles are also called North American Retrievers, they are a cross of LD and GD. pretty much the same as a higher generation LD or GD at that point. Good luck in your search, feel free to PM me with any specific questions about breeders if you have them. |

Hey - thanks you guys - so basically I need to be looking more at parent dogs - and not worry so much about which doodle it is....
Well that almost makes it more complicated doesn't it!! Ha! My kids tell everyone we meet with a dog that we are getting a labradoodle. Some people are like "a what?" - but others seem to know just what they are talking about and tell me they have seen a labradoodle or know someone with one and they love them.... lol. It's funny though - because my kids run up to ANYONE with a dog and my middle son told a lady the other day "My mom's getting a job so we can have a dog" - lol. Mom is getting a job for MANY reasons - a dog is just a little something extra... but to the kids - it's all about the doodle! Ok, I'm going back to narrowing down the breeders - already contacted two - one doesn't have puppies planned for fall -- the other one had medium sized doodles planned - but not born until Oct/Nov - ugh ... I don't think I can wait that long - plus we really want a standard size.... Todd - or any of you guys - - if you have a suggestion for a breeder in Texas - PLEASE send it to me!! Heather |
