I have been offered an F1B for an amazing low price, genetically tested parents, good health guarantee, etc. I have been considering getting another dog since Beck is so desperate for a playmate since my Aussie is getting too old to play with him, and the cost of doggie day care and having him taken out for a half day run with other dogs is getting to be more expensive than taking on another dog. I would like some opinions about this little guy's coat, does it look like he will be a shedder? He's a little over 11 weeks old, the picture was taken at 10 weeks:
![]() I probably need to make a decision on this today or tomorrow as there is another family interested in him

Of course you should have a second doodle for Beck to play with!!
But. You are such a good, loving, responsible doodle owner I would suggest you look into being a guardian for a breeder that you respect and would be comfortable to be associated with. You have a good understanding of breeding from your background and its clear from your postings that you do so you would be an intelligent and informative guardian home. If cost is an issue, since you mentioned it in your post, a guardianship is usually no or very low cost to you. Does it sound like I am trying to recruit you? I wish. If only you were not 2 days drive away! But you know enough breeders that you could apporach some, and I would happily be a doggy reference for you. |

I considered being a guardian, but my husband doesn't like the idea and he's very stubborn. He said I couldn't get this little guy then this morning when he woke up he said 'ok, I agree, he's cute go look at him and use your best judgment'. In case anyone is wondering- there is nothing wrong with this pup, he's perfect and according to the breeder has a great temperament, fortunately the breeder is local so I can drive over there and check him out sometime today, but breeders here just can't sell their dogs even at reduced prices. I know of a lady with a litter of drop dead gorgeous 12 week old show quality white standard poodles, she used to sell her pups for no less than $1800 and they were all spoken for within a few weeks of birth, now she is watching these pups grow up and is having a tough time selling them for less than half of that.

I'm so excited about this for you that I didn't respond to the question on shedding.
F1B's don't really shed, do they? ........and HEY! What's a little shedding? This little guy is sooooooooo CUTE!!

Bailey from our first litter. His puppy coat was non-allergenic. The dad visited us multiple times before picking Bailey and really got his nose in there to test it out. He didnt react to Hershey either. Bailey's adult coat came in, MAJOR reactions, could be controlled by medications that didnt make him drousy. A family 3 doors down has adopted him, after my OK, so the first families kids still see him whenever they want since they are friends with the new families children. Sad, very sad, but such is life. Not the decision I would make, but I am not allergic and I dont know how terrible it feels or not. We offered to take Bailey back and would have loved to, but he is happy down the street.

Kirama..........personally i feel doodles are meant to have companion dogs, or those of us that do see how happy they are playing,
having canine companionship etc. NOW peanut's coat looked alot like the pic shown............YOU can ask the breeder if the dog is shedding now or easily pulls out. BUT chances are you'll have a nonshedding coat. BUT in spring time there can be a bit of undercoat shedding as i don't knwo where you live. a Quick trip to the groomer eliminates it....as normally Peanut never sheds except springtime as she's double coated (but she is a goldendoodle). Personally, I would say YES GO FOR IT........it's well worth it. like TODD said bring your doodle to make sure they get along and there's no issues etc. Keep us informed.........and deep down sounds like your hubby already fell in love with that puppy

Lynne, the pup is darling! I love his coloring and his expressions...looks like he came from good breeding and I love that he has been raised with children...and that the breeder is training...good things for sure.
Did the breeder do health testing on the parents? That is a biggie...and what is the warranty like? As far as shedding...he could shed...his coat is borderline and I have had pups with similar looking coats that do shed. Sometimes a coat like that will shed during the puppy phase and then stop once the adult coat is in...but you will know more once you meet him. Gently tug on his coat and see if any hair comes out in your fingers...if so, he is a shedder...if not, he may be okay, but still may shed later on...most of my real shedders will shed as early as 8 weeks. He is certainly a beauty! |

By the way...please, everyone, understand that ALL generation of Doodles can shed and while F1B is generally better at not shedding than an F1, I have known (and produced) some VERY Labby F1B puppies! And some very curly or thick coats will shed...please don't spread the myth that F1Bs don't shed! (I just read the post from the family re-homing their F1 because they were told it doesn't shed...and now the pup needs to leave, because it sheds...) If shedding is a deal breaker, we must never let anyone believe that a Doodle WILL be non-shedding...

well I went and saw him and totally fell in love, so did Beck who came with me so we brought him home! He's very docile and curious (reminds me of Beck when he was little). He came with a 2 year health guarantee parents are tested & he's had his first 2 series of puppy shots. I tugged on his coat and nothing came out at all, the breeder said she can't guarantee a coat, but that it is very similar to a female from her last litter and that puppy doesn't shed at all.
so, we took him home with us! Beck is so gentle with him, he keeps going up to him and licking him. I will introduce him to Kira a little bit later, I'm sure that will go well as she just gushes maternal instincts around pups. I will post some pictures later on today & thanks to those of you who responded to the post!
