Hi Michelle...I would say to discuss it with your vet. Sometimes they have a certain age that they prefer...but, for me, I would say to do it before they reach maturity (to prevent any "hormone" habits from froming.) Since most males mature at 6-8 months of age (some sooner, believe it or not) I would say 5 or 5.5 months of age is good. I also think that if they are yonger, they recover faster.
There is a debate going on about early spay and neuter but I would not try to neuter him too early, that decision is generally made by breeders so that the dogs are neutered before they leave the breeder...if you are getting your dog intact, just plan to have him nuetered by 6 months unless your vet has a good reason to wait.

What I found, when dogs behave ... inappropriately... is to distract them. To dogs, humping is not about sex but more about dominance...so if your puppy is humping legs I would say to do something to distract him...don't pay attention to the humping...just clap your hands and show him a toy or squeak a toy or toss a ball...take him for a walk, ask him to go outside (if you have a fenced area and he likes to go out)...but try to ignore the behavior.
Sometimes male dogs do this if they have an infection and become itchy...so be sure to ask your vet about that too...
I am glad that you asked...hope the answers are helpful.
Gosh, the time difference is so hard for me to imagine...it is 9:35 pm here.

NEUTER! Samson has an appointment October 9th. Only thing I'm concerned about is how worried I'll be because it'll be the first time since I got him that he'll be out of my care for the day.

One huge plus for me personally (and it's nothing medical or to help control unwanted pets, even though those are key reasons) is Samson lil' man part hopefully won't come out and say HI anymore. Tell ya what, nothing grosses me out more than picking up Samson to put him in the bathtub and accidently touching his exposed man part....EWWWW!!! OR getting that PERFECT picture of Samson only to notice later, his thingy was out! UGH! LOL.
