Best Feeding Habits for Labradoodle Owners to Follow

Best Feeding HabitsThe Labradoodle is by no means a small dog, so you should be prepared to purchase a lot of dog food if you become a dog owner with this breed. While it is true that Labradoodles eat a lot of food, you need to be careful about what kind of food you choose and how much you feed your dog at one time – if you aren’t careful your Labradoodle could end up with a serious health problem like obesity or gastric torsion. Keep reading to learn some healthy feeding habits for Labradoodle owners to follow.

  1. Choose a High-Quality Diet

If you want your Labradoodle to live a long and healthy life, the best thing you can do is choose a high-quality commercial dog food product to feed him. Inexpensive dog foods are made with high levels of carbohydrates and low-quality fillers like corn, wheat, and soy ingredients. Any protein that these products include typically comes from animal by-products or plant proteins. To keep your Labradoodle healthy, you need to choose a high-quality product that is made with real animal proteins and healthy animal fats with limited carbohydrate levels. Choose a product that is free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients as well as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Real animal protein should be at the top of the ingredients list and any carbohydrates listed should be digestible – things like sweet potato, whole grain oats, or brown rice are infinitely preferable to corn or wheat products.

  1. Consider a Large-Breed Specific Formula

The basic nutritional needs of all dogs are the same, though individual breeds have slightly different requirements when it comes to calorie intake. You may be surprised to learn that small-breed dogs actually need a more calorie-dense diet than large-breed dogs in order to support their fast metabolisms. Labradoodles are a medium- to large-sized breed so they need plenty of protein in their diets with moderate amounts of fat and limited carbohydrate content. To make sure that your Labradoodle gets the nutrients he needs without taking in too many calories you might want to consider a formula that is designed specifically for medium- or large-breed dogs.

  1. Monitor Your Labradoodle’s Intake

No matter what kind of food you choose for your Labradoodle, you should keep a close eye on his intake and make adjustments where needed. Use the feeding instructions on the dog food package as a guide for determining how much to feed your dog. Follow the recommended amount (usually based on your dog’s weight) for a few weeks and keep an eye on your Labradoodle’s weight and condition. If your dog gains too much weight you should scale back his daily intake a little bit. If he loses weight or appears to have low energy levels, increase his portion a little bit.

As you can see, learning about the Labradoodle’s temperament and personality is not enough if you are serious about becoming a Labradoodle owner. The type and amount of food you offer your Labradoodle will have a serious impact on his health and wellbeing so take the time to learn about your dog’s nutritional needs and to provide for them as best you can.
